After a cold morning of Medical Locals a BOX ALARM was transmitted for a BUILDING ON FIRE in the 1200 blk. of K St. NE, just a block and a half away from quarters. ENGINE Co. 10 and TRUCK Co. 13 both 1st DUE arrived on location to find a three (3) story, ordinary, commercial building with light smoke showing.
The TRINIDAD FIRE DEPARTMENT went to work locating a small fire on the first floor and quickly knocking all visible fire. Just minute’s later conditions rapidly deteriorated on the second floor changing from a light smoke condition to thick smoke banked down to the floor and an intense rise in the heat level. Command ordered all units out of the building and after ensuring that all companies were accounted for quickly went to defensive operations. With a massive fire load of tires and other materials the fire developed into a raging inferno that could be seen for miles. The fire could not be controlled until the application of foam and it still burns more than 24 hours after the initial alarm.
13 TRUCK operated on the alarm for MORE than 12 hours while 10 ENGINE was packed up (After 6 hrs. of PUMP TIME, Laying and Using 600' of 1.5" and 550' of 3") and put back into service to respond to the never ending runs in its Local Alarm area. This was just ONE of more than FIVE FIRES IN THE CITY during #2 PLATOON, mutual aid companies from PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, ARLINGTON COUNTY, FAIRFAX COUNTY, NAVAL DISTRICT WASHINGTON, and ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE FIRE DEPARTMENTS.
